What Are the Best Winter Sun Holidays to Escape the British Weather?

We love Kent and the fact that we have access to the beaches during the summer months, but gloomy weather and freezing temperatures make the winters a bit tough to handle. Winter holidays where we can fly out of Gatwick Airport and jet off to someplace warm with gorgeous beaches to lounge around on seems just the ticket.

Here are three enticing vacation spots to get away from it all this winter.

Sunny Cyprus

Getting to sunny Cyprus from Gatwick only takes 4 ½ hours, so it’s a pleasingly short journey. The best times of the year to go are October or November, so it’s not a great Christmas Day getaway. The temperatures are also a little cooler than some other destinations ranging between 16 and 21-degrees C.

Do you enjoy a lively resort? Then head west once you’re there to reach the Paphos resort. And for spectacular local views, take a trip to the Akamas Peninsula, which will take your breath away. It is a natural habitat which is accessible using off-road vehicles, mountain bikes, or on foot.

There are seven hours of winter sun to be enjoyed. The nights get noticeably cooler though, so it’s a good idea to pack a fleece or something stylish for the ladies to keep out the chills. The nightlife and restaurants are plentiful on the island, so you won’t have any trouble finding a place to eat, drink and be merry.

Hop over to the Canary Islands

The flight time from Gatwick is only 3 ½ hours and you’re treated to temperatures that could reach 21-degrees Centigrade. Sun-seekers enjoy the Canaries because there’s a great choice of different types of resorts depending on what you prefer. The bustling Playa de las Americas with its six sandy beaches or the Playa del Ingles resorts are both worth a look.

It’s also possible to take a boat to the El Hierro, La Gomera, or La Palma islands for a day trip or a few days more to see how they differ from each other. You’re likely to enjoy up to six hours of bright sunshine and there’s only a small chance of light showers for a few days in December. Certainly, it’s far warmer and with better weather than the UK at that time of year.

Exotic Thailand

Flying out to south-east Asia is a giant leap for some people and for others, it’s no different to a trip through Europe. The transatlantic flight certain takes longer (14+ hours) and there are a few more tropical bugs to be concerned about.

The average temperature in winter time is between 18 and 32-degrees C. It’s cooler there at that time of the year. November and December are the best months to go for a less humid, clear sky environment. There’s the busy cities of Bangkok and Chiang Mai in the north, plus the various islands to explore further south. When traveling to the islands, there’s usually less medical care available, so it’s a good idea to bring a comprehensive travel kit – you can buy travel health kits online or from a local pharmacy. You never know when you might need one.

There are so many winter sun destinations that it’s tough to choose. Flights are cheap enough right now with the lower cost of airline fuel, so even far-off destinations are more accessible than ever.
