Las Vegas is affectionately known as “The Entertainment Capital of the World”, and for those who know anything about the place, it’s well deserving of its title. This city in the middle of the desert in the United States has been built around entertainment of all sorts, from hotels that take after Venice canals to the biggest live shows and entertainers from all over the world.
Las Vegas has been an entertainment hub since 1944, when Liberace introduced the glitz and glam of the Vegas show to the rest of the world. The list of iconic Las Vegas performers goes on and on, and won’t be slowing down any time soon. Here are just a few of these all-time great acts who have worked hard to earn their title as a Las Vegas icon.
Liberace was a flamboyant showman who became a pianist, vocalist, actor and even a WWF announcer. Nicknamed “Mr. Showmanship”, at the height of his fame, from the 1950s to the 1970s, Liberace was the highest-paid entertainer in the world with established residencies in Las Vegas.
Elvis Presley was another top nightclub act in Las Vegas’ from 1969 through the mid-‘70s. He was a pop sensation and starred in Hollywood films, performing before sold-out crowds and earning himself a place in the Las Vegas list of iconic performers. Presley remains a popular cultural icon with his fans today, even 40 years after his death.
Wayne Newton performed more than 30,000 shows in Las Vegas, starting in 1959 at the Fremont Hotel with the Newton Brothers. His latest act in the city wrapped up in 2010. This child star got an early start, and his singing and entertaining earned him nicknames that include “The Midnight Idol”, “Mr. Las Vegas” and “Mr. Entertainment”.
Celine Dion is an international superstar who accepted a five-year residency at Caesars Palace in 2003. Although her fame arose long before performing in Las Vegas, the influence she’s had on this city is indisputable.
Las Vegas isn’t just about gambling, poker and live casinos games. It’s been home to a plethora of singers and performers that made a name for themselves on the glitzy Las Vegas stages. While many icons got their start decades ago, the current generation of these incredible performers are also earning their place in the history book of Las Vegas icons, alongside all the rest.
