Children’s Week On The Railway

The first half term of our 90th year and how appropriate to devote it to the Children (young and old) who love the railway and its splendid engines. How many of us started our connection with this wonderful railway when a child and it has remained a lifelong interest.

Join us this February half term to celebrate with our junior members of the Bug Club. RH&DR’s Bug Club members travel free during this week, with The Bug in steam or on public display each day.

For this week only Bug Club membership will be available for just £5.

This annual membership includes a personalised birthday card, a membership card, badge and a special reduced rate of travel on all non-special event days. The travel rate for Bug Club members also includes entry to the Toy & Model Exhibition at New Romney Station.

Plus free children’s activities for all Romney Rover ticket holders.

Saturday 11th– The Bug will be steam at New Romney to greet our friends from the Press and to see off our first train to Hythe to mark the beginning of Children’s Week. Come along before 9.15 and you can help fill the Bug with water. Beware you might get a little bit wet.   He will be about until 2.00 at New Romney for you to get a photo of him or to try your hand at drawing him to enter into our art competition. Collect your entry papers from the New Romney Bug Club stall in the Heywood Buffet Conservatory.

Sunday 12th– Join us in Hythe Vintage Tea Room between 12-2 to take part in cupcake themed scratch art and scene making.

Monday 13th– The Bug will be on display at New Romney Station with our luxury coach the ‘Royal Saloon’, feel free to take a seat and take your own photos- why not share them with us on social media? There will also be two child friendly explanations about ‘how a Steam engine works’ given by one of our Drivers at  11.45 and 1.30  Also your chance to help give The Bug a polish whilst he is cool after a days rest and safe to touch with our cleaning cloths.

Tuesday 14th– Romney Bear will be out to greet our guests at New Romney before travelling down to Dungeness to take part in some Valentines themed arts and crafts between 12-2.

Wednesday 15th– The Bug will be running to Romney Warren Halt for passengers to visit Romney Marsh Visitor Centre. The Toy & Model Exhibition at New Romney will also be hosting a child friendly behind the scenes tour from 11:10-11:35 and 12:50-1:15.

Thursday 16th– Romney Marsh Visitor Centre will be open with information and displays about Bugs of a very different kind. Extra trains will be running, some hauled by The Bug to the Romney Warren Halt right next door to the Visitor Centre. The Toy & Model Exhibition at New Romney will also be hosting a child friendly behind the scenes tour from 11:10-11:35 and 12:50-1:15.

Friday 17th– The Bug will be running to Romney Warren Halt for passengers to visit Romney Marsh Visitor Centre. The Toy & Model Exhibition at New Romney will also be hosting a child friendly behind the scenes tour from 11:10-11:35 and 12:50-1:15. For the arty children amongst us there will be a chance to paint your own transport frame in the Heywood Buffet- perhaps suited to a photo of one of our trains?
