Best of the ‘Fizz’ for the party season

Andy Rose, owner of independent wine merchants, Grand Cru Co in Beckenham selects the best champagnes and sparkling wine for this Christmas and New Year, that won’t break the bank:

“Christmas is the perfect time for a little indulgence and whatever the mood or occasion this party season, sparkling wine is the perfect way to celebrate.

“Whether you’re having a cosy pre-Christmas dinner with your partner, you’re hosting a large family Christmas or planning a New Year’s Eve party, we’ve selected our best fizz to fit your celebration.”

  • Rive della Chiesa Prosecco Frizzante NV at £9.99

Characteristically fruity with hints of golden apple and peach, this is a brilliant, light-straw coloured wine which is slightly sweet to the taste. Excellent with desserts, it is suitable as an aperitif wine, or with various hors d’oeuvres and lean dishes.

  • Cá di alte Prosecco Spumante NV at £12.95

This wine has a pleasant bouquet and fine bubbles with notes of pear and floral hints which is followed by a very bright and clean palate. Very dry, with lingering freshness.  This works well with Parma and other air-dried ham, simple cocktail-sized sandwiches, focaccia, mini quiches and frittata, mild cheeses such as fontina, white asparagus, sushi, seafood and vegetable-based dim sum, especially prawn toasts and seafood dumplings.

  • Rosato Spumante Cá Morlin NV at £12.95

Made solely from lightly crushed Raboso grapes, macerated briefly to extract a coral pink colour, this Rosato Spumante is a brilliant coral pink colour. It is soft and fragrant, with perfumes of strawberries. Perfect with smoked salmon with a squeeze of lemon juice, or tempura squid and a sweet chilli dipping sauce.

  • Skinny Prosecco NV at £18.95

Light and refreshing with floral and apple aromas on the nose. The palate is fresh, lively, and fruity with great acidity and notes of green apple, golden apple, honeydew melon and pear.

  • Janisson Baradon Brut Tradition NV at £18.95

The “Tradition NV” from Janisson Baradon is a blend of 50% Pinot Noir, 40% Chardonnay and 10% Pinot Meunier. It reveals aromas of red berries to the nose and palate, which superbly mix with notes of white flowers. Try it with salmon and all its derivatives. The pairing provides a pleasant sensation of the acidic wine ‘cutting through’ the richness of the food and cleansing the palate.

  • Chapel Down Blanc de Blanc 2010 at £24.95

This beautifully complex vintage sparkling wine has aromas of baked apple and citrus together with brioche and rich autolytic notes which comes from the extended ageing process. Perfect with white fish, oysters or caviar.

  • Andre Clouet Rosé Champagne NV at £29.95

As ever with Andre Clouet, a generous and fine champagne. Plenty of bold red fruit and very obviously, a Pinot Noir. Yet all the pleasure points that make champagne so special are woven throughout. Pour it on its own as refreshing aperitif, or as partner with light seafood, charcuterie, salads or fresh fruit.

  • Pol Roger NV at £34.95

A truly beautiful example of a champagne from a very famous name. On the nose, the champagne is dominated by aromas of white flowers, green apples, brioche and a trace of minerality. On the palate, there are notes of stone fruits a certain nutty appeal and a hint of honey supporting the freshness of the acidity. It’s smooth, creamy taste would go perfectly with your Christmas Turkey.
