Investing the money you have saved is a great way to build wealth. Finding and choosing the right investments for you will depend on a number of factors and will require some planning. How much risk are you prepared to take? What return on your investment are you hoping to make? Property is often the first major investment people make in their lives. This is due to the fact that this investment has the added bonus of being able to live in it. Property values in Kent have increased on average by 26% over the last 10 years with the average price of a property currently at £339,253. It must be noted also that the value of a property can go down as well as up and when looking at property purely as an investment there are some pros and cons.

Pros: Multiple opportunities like buy-to-let and property renovation. Good long-term investment and the property markets are generally quite stable.

Cons: High cost of entry as a large deposit is required. The property market is not very liquid and ongoing maintenance is needed.

Financial Markets

The financial markets can accommodate investments of any size. If you are just starting out and have only a few hundred pounds or are a high net worth individual with millions in the bank, the financial markets have opportunities for you.

The financial markets are extremely liquid so buying and selling is instantaneous making your money always available. There is a massive range of different instruments that can be traded including stocks, forex, commodities and more. Trading can be done from just about anywhere including at or using a mobile device with a trading app, of which there are many available in 2017. The financial market can be volatile, moving up and down quickly, so avoid taking excessive risks.

Cryptocurrencies

Cryptocurrencies like Bitcoin have created a buzz recently and seen a massive increase in value. The cryptocurrency market is extremely volatile, fast moving and highly speculative. If you are looking for a large return on your investment, then cryptocurrencies have that potential, but equally the risks involved are just as large. Investing in cryptocurrencies can be done online via cryptocurrency exchanges, forex brokers or spread betting and CFD brokers.

Peer to peer lending

Peer-to-peer lending is when a person who wants to borrow money receives it directly from another person looking to invest their money. Peer-to-peer lending platforms are online based and bring these people together and help facilitate the transaction.

You can choose to invest as little or as much as you like, and on different time frames (1 year or 5 year is an example). There are some risks involved, but generally, it’s quite a low-risk investment. You could expect to earn around 4-5% per year on average, not a life changing amount but it beats a savings account!

Start or invest in a business

We’ve all seen Dragons Den and yes it would be fun to sit at a table with all your cash and make investment decisions based on quick 15 minute interviews. In reality, investing in or starting a business is quite risky by nature due to the high failure rate of businesses.

A lot of planning needs to go into any decisions, however, if you believe you can add value to a business then it could be a lot of fun with large potential rewards. Starting a business can also be a great way to connect with and bring value to your local community. The latest statistics show 8,335 new enterprises were created in Kent in 2015.
